IUPAC Name
An IUPAC name is a unique descriptor given to a drug that is derived from the internationally recognized chemical nomenclature system developed in the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry Nomenclature of Organic Chemistry Blue Book project 1,2. The purpose of this nomenclature system and the IUPAC name that is defined for a drug or chemical is to establish a system of internationally agreed upon principles and rules that when applied, produces a systematic nomenclature that enables a common language for communicating and referring to a great many drugs and chemicals that exist 1,2.
In particular, the IUPAC name and the systematic principles and rules of the IUPAC Nomenclature of Organic Chemistry that derived it for a particular drug should inform and/or describe to knowledgeable readers a unique and unambiguous structural formula that unequivocally identifies the drug in question 1,2.
