Product Concept
In DrugBank this term refers to a particular feature developed and maintained by DrugBank. This feature creates a vocabulary of drugs, products, and brands, offering a hierarchical structure that enables easy navigation and the comparison of products across jurisdictions. Hence, it allows the selection of a specific drug representation in a three step process:
- The first step consists of the search for either the drug product or drug ingredient.
- The second step involves the selection of the available administration routes.
- The third step involves the selection of the available dosages for this particular representation.
At each level, all exact products for a concept can be extracted, including codes used by various jurisdictions (NDC code, etc.). This system allows the linking of a medical record or other concept to a very specific product (such as Tylenol), or a more general product (such as Acetaminophen).
Product concepts are available in the DrugBank data extracts and DrugBank API.
